Walter "Max" Bendowski

 

Walter “Max” Bendowski, 94, of West Scranton, passed away peacefully Sunday in his childhood home. He was re united in heaven with his beloved high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Joan. Joan passed away July 29th, 2017. Born October 17th, 1931, he was the son of the late Frank and Anna (Boczon) Bendowski. He was a 1951 graduate of West Scranton High School, where he had a stellar football career under coach Sam Donato and was named one of the first Athletes of the Week in 1950. After high school graduation, he entered the United States Army and was stationed at the Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany during the Korean War. Walter was formerly employed by Eschenbaugh and Rogers and A&P Food Stores. He retired as a truck driver with Consolidated Freights. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, West Scranton. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Walter will always be remembered for his selflessness, generosity, and devotion to those he loved. His greatest joy was being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are three children, son, Walter Jr. (Max) Bendowski and wife Corinne, of Plains; daughter, Susan Hench and husband, Rick, of Harrisburg; and daughter, Debbie Kempa and husband, Ray, of Old Forge. Walter leaves behind four grandchildren, Nicholas Bendowski and wife, Cameron, of Naples, Fl; Caitlin Bendowski and fiancé, Ryan Carey, of Plains; Kelly Sklanka and husband, Steven, of Wyoming; and Ashley Kempa and fiancé, Billy Nash, of Old Forge. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Emmett and Owen Bendowski, and Skylar Sklanka; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Joseph, Chester, Stanley, Frank, Edmund, and William and three sisters, Helen Labrosky, Jean Drost, and Irene Godleski. The family would like to thank Dr. Dominic Ruggiero and staff and extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to neighbors Tom and Arlene Loss and family for their kind and caring hearts throughout the years. Viewing hours will be Friday from 10 to 12 p.m. at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann St., West Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, West Locust Street, West Scranton. Interment will be at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Taylor.
