Thomas P. Conway

 

Thomas P. Conway, 89, of the Minooka section of Scranton, died Friday at Allied Inpatient Hospice. His wife, Mary Hayes Conway, passed away August 15, 2014. Born in Scranton, son of the late Andrew and Claire Klink Conway, he taught English for over thirty years in the Wallenpaupack Area, Moravia, New York, and the Lackawanna Trail School Districts. In addition, Tom coached high school basketball at Wallenpaupack, Lackawanna Trail and Bishop Hannan High School. A longtime member of Divine Mercy Parish, Tom believed in faith, family, and quiet generosity. He enjoyed poetry, reading Shakespeare and weekly card games with his friends at the American Legion. Tom was an avid Notre Dame fan and he loved to laugh and tell jokes. Tom was a member of the Irish American Men’s Association, The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Honorary Grand Marshall, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Post Connelly American Legion, and the recipient of the “Quiet Man of the Year '' award. Surviving are his daughter, Patti Joyce and husband, Parnell, Wellington, FL; two sons, Kevin Conway and wife, Karin, Scranton; Tom Conway and wife, Melissa, Bethlehem; seven grandchildren, Keary Joyce; Breanne Joyce and Ryan Hydock; and Conor Joyce and wife Kate; Kayleigh Corbett and husband, Pat; Shane Conway and wife, Jessica; Tyler Conway and TJ Harris; and Fikire Conway; five great-grandchildren, Clare, Brock, Jack, and Seamus Corbett; and Caroline Conway; sister, Rose Condolon and husband, Edward, Crofton, MD; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Gerard, Joe, Paul, Larry, Andy, Leo, John, and Jimmy Conway; two sisters, Claire Schmitt and Jean Lee; a sister-in-law Jean McNally; and brother-in-law Jerry Hayes and Jim McNally. The family would like to thank Tom's niece and caregiver, Debbie Flynn, for her outstanding love and care. Also, a special thanks to the staff at Allied Inpatient Hospice, and Doctors Cognetti, Roe, Speicher, Moran, Weinberger, and Schust. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10am in Divine Mercy Parish by Rev. Francis Pauselli, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Wednesday from 4-7pm in the Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home, 2908 Birney Avenue, Scranton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Allied Inpatient Hospice, 511 Morgan Highway, Scranton, PA 18508 or St. Francis of Assisi Soup Kitchen, 500 Penn Ave, Scranton, PA.
