Thomas Joseph Duffy

Thomas Joseph Duffy, 57 of Lake Carey, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday. Born in Scranton, Tom was the son of the late Mary Lou Duffy Gidula and the late Edward Duffy. Tom grew up in South Scranton and graduated from Central High School in 1984 where he was the mascot for the Golden Eagles. Tom completed his associate's degree before enlisting in the Army where he served as an officer and was honorably discharged. He was a longtime car salesman at Matt Burne Honda, where he made lifelong friends. Above all, Tom was a proud and devoted father to Morgan, a loving brother, uncle, godfather and dear friend to many. During his life, Tom was known for his witty sarcasm, generous spirit and storytelling. He was an avid Stanford sports fan, a proud Irishman, and loved the home and community he built at Lake Carey. He was known for making everyone laugh, talking politics and singing Frank Sinatra at karaoke. During his life Tom raised funds for Cure Spinal Muscular Atrophy and always showed up to help family, friends, neighbors and strangers in times of need. Surviving are his daughter, Morgan Duffy-Granville and husband Chris Duffy-Granville of San Mateo, Calif.; brother, Edward Duffy; sisters, Colleen Lynott and husband Steve Lynott, Kelly Ryan, Kathy Duffy, Mary Lou Fanelli and husband Mike Fanelli; goddaughters, Jessica Fanelli and Mackenzie Duffy; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Savitsky and husband Mike Savitsky. A service for family will be held at Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Friday, with visitation to follow from 3 to 6 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. that evening at Kelly's Creekside Inn on Route 92 in Tunkhannock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Tom's memory to Disability Rights Advocates (dralegal.org), a non-profit organization that supports the rights of people with disabilities, a cause close to both Tom and his daughter, Morgan.
