Thomas J. Cawley

April 21, 1950 to December 1, 2023

Thomas J. Cawley, 73, of Olyphant, passed away Friday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. Born in Scranton on April 21, 1950, he was the son of the late Patrick F. Cawley and Florence Burke Cawley. He was raised in the Minooka section of Scranton and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in the Signal Corps. In addition to assignments in the United States, he served 20 consecutive months in Vietnam. Upon leaving the Army, he returned to Vietnam for two additional years to work as a civilian contractor for the Department of Defense. Tom then re-enlisted in the Army and spent another six years in the service, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. His service included a tour of duty in Germany. He left the Army and then worked as a computer maintenance technician for a government contractor. In this job he traveled extensively throughout the United States as well as spending a year in Korea. Tom ended his career as an electronics technician for the United States Army at Tobyhanna Army Depot. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his brother, William Cawley and wife, Mary Jane; his companion of many years, Theresa Charney; nieces, Heather Carreiro and Lisa Zelno; and nephew, Master Sgt. Patrick Cawley, United States Army Special Forces. He was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Cawley; sister-in-law, Betty Ann Cawley; and infant sister, Mary. The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, the Dunmore Health Care Center and Geisinger Community Medical Center hospital for their care of Tom prior to his passing. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home, 2908 Birney Ave., Scranton. Friends may call starting at 5 p.m. At the request of the family, a private burial will be held at Veterans' National Cemetery in Annville, Pa. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore Pa.
