Susan Corbett, owner of Minooka Subaru, passed away at home May 21, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Joseph "Jake" and Mary Payton Corbett.
A 1972 graduate of South Catholic High School, Susy worked briefly at Northeastern Bank before she joined her father and brothers at Minooka Subaru, where she managed to perform the almost impossible task of bringing order to the chaos of the rapidly growing car dealership. Susy dedicated herself to "the lot," not out of any desire for personal gain, but from her strong sense of responsibility to her family and the employees of the dealership. Through her tireless work and attention to detail she was the backbone of the business who kept it standing through tough economic times. More importantly, she was also the heart of the business. With her innate sense of fairness and her unwavering integrity she ensured that Minooka Subaru remains a family business in the truest sense of the word, with family being defined not only as the many relatives who work there, but also its lifelong employees and customers.
This instinct to step in when she saw a job that needed to be done meant that Susy was the designated family organizer. She made sure that all family events were celebrated in style and that no one was ever left out. It is because of these efforts that all her nieces and nephews have always felt so devoted to her, but more importantly to each other, which was her ultimate goal.
Susy had a natural gift for making - and keeping - friends. If she saw someone was having a problem she didn't need to be asked, she just figured out a way that she could help. She inherited from her mother a strong sense of empathy, which meant that she could be counted on by all her friends and family to lend an ear without fear of judgment or breaking of confidences. One of the few bright spots of the last year has been the outpouring of prayers and expressions of love that she was able to enjoy from the countless people whose lives she touched.
It will come as a surprise to no one who knew her that Susy's last act of generosity was her request that her body be donated to the University of Pennsylvania for research into ways to end the suffering that osteosarcoma inflicts.
Susy is survived by her siblings, Cathleen and Thomas Shields, James and District Judge Joanne Price Corbett, Eileen and Mark Occhipinti, Joseph and Ellen McCool Corbett, Clare Corbett, and Robert and Trish Finnerty Corbett. She was the proud aunt to Sara Shields, Selena and Matt Lynn, Molly Shields, Michael and Dana Shields, Anna, Susan and Tommy Occhipinti, Joe and Maura Corbett, Patrick and Kayleigh Corbett, Brian, Tim, Jimmy, Christopher and Elizabeth Corbett. She is also survived by the greatest joy in her life, her great-nieces and nephews, Cecelia and Kaleigh Brown, Henry, Vivienne and Alice Lynn, Jake and Matthew Shields, Amelia Miller, Ryan, Owen, Declan, Clare, Brock and Jack Corbett. She is also survived by her uncle, Marty Judge; and aunt, Nancy Payton Snopik.
In addition to her parents and uncles and aunts, Susy was preceded in death by her sister, Mary; and her great-nephew, James Patrick Corbett.
