Stephen M. Scully

Stephen M. Scully, DC, 69, passed away on Saturday evening while under the care of the ICU staff of Geisinger Community Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Scranton, Stephen was the son of the late Timothy H. and Miriam P. Scully. He was a 1972 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School, attended the University of Scranton and was a cum laude graduate of the Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles, California. Stephen’s chiropractic practice in Santa Monica, Calif., was quite successful where he treated numerous clients in the business and entertainment world throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Beyond his professional career, Stephen was a man of exquisite taste in clothing and fine wine. He loved traveling especially through the California wineries and vineyards during family visits to California but one of his fondest travel spots was to Benton ... a place that always put a smile on his face. Besides traveling, Stephen found great joy in the kitchen using his culinary skills to show his creativity while allowing him the opportunity to do something for others. He grew his own vegetables and herbs and loved to share his recipes and delicious foods with his family and many friends. He was an avid and loyal Democrat and he never would miss the opportunity to participate in our democracy at the ballot box. More than anything, Stephen loved music and entertainment dating back to the inaugural launch of Scranton’s James Barrett McNulty’s Showmobile. A dedicated follower of the Grateful Dead, Stephen saw many shows of his favorite band including his first “Dead” concert at Scranton’s Catholic Youth Center in April of 1971. A noted sports fan, Stephen found his love for baseball as a member of the Men of Green Ridge Little League and was a proud member of Scranton Prep’s first ever football team. He was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan and you could always find him at home Sunday’s cheering on the New England Patriots thoroughly enjoying Tom Brady’s last minute trickeries to win. Stephen cherished his Irish heritage and relished in the stories of Ireland he heard from his grandfather, Timothy Joseph Scully. He was also a direct descendant of Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States. Surviving are two sisters, Kathleen Chickson, Scranton; and Anne Wettengel and husband, Phil, Worcester, Mass.; brother, Timothy H. Jr. and his wife, Marian Cassette Scully, Glendale, Calif.; his longtime friend and companion, Kim Parks, Albany, N.Y.; six nieces and nephews, Kara; James and his wife, Laura; and Douglas Chickson; Matthew Scully, Philip and Elizabeth Wettengel; great-nieces and nephews, Alex, Sophia and Emma Chickson; uncle, Fr. John Pierce, OFM; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, James Chickson. Stephen shared a very special bond with his sister, Kathleen, who lovingly cared for him. He had great admiration for his nieces and nephews who appreciated his incredible wit but it was his nephew, Doug Chickson, he appreciated most who came to his aid always going over and above whenever needed. The family would also like to thank Dr. Tracey Galardi for caring for Stephen with such sensitivity and dignity. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Aug. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Oram Street. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call in the chapel starting at 9:30 a.m. Arrangements by McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Scully Scholars Educational Fund, c/o University of Scranton, Scranton, PA.
