Ruth Alberta Black-Jones departed this life on Friday at Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab after a lengthy illness. She was 74 years young.
Ruth was born on Sept 29, 1950 in Alachua, Fl, to the late Ernest (Buddy) and Vivian Black. She was employed at United Neighborhood Centers, where she worked with countless youth and retired after many years of service with that non-profit agency. She was a volunteer for charities, organizations and her church, Salvation Apostolic Temple. Ruth worked with church families and was active with the PA Chapter of Wailing Women Worldwide and many other ministries in Scranton. When called, she always volunteered without hesitation. She was a very active member of Bethel AME Institutional Church, where she served as the Sunday School Superintendent, Steward Board member, Trustee Board member, Gree-Ross Viola Choraleers member, and a member of the Mass Choir under the direction of John Stephens, aka John Legend, along with numerous other church activities. She was always willing to help her pastors in any way she could, especially Rev Dr. Alphonse Allen Jr, who called Ruth his friend.
She leaves to mourn her death, a son, Marshawn Black (Suzzane), Syracuse NY; two daughters, Shanette Black, Throop; and Valerie Black, S Abington Twp; sister, Charlotte Ledbetter, Scranton; and a brother-in-law, Nathan Harvey, S Abington Twp; three granddaughters, Marrisa and Mackenzie Black, and Ciara Nolan, who were the lights of her life; along with many adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, Freddie Mae Baldwin, Mildred Harvey, Israel Daniels, Edward "Pop" Daniels, Dr. Preston "Sonny Boy" Black, MD; Olga Fay Black and Beverly Jean Black.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Elan Skilled Nursing of Scranton and Rehab and Compassionate Care Hospice. They would also like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and condolences from well-wishing friends. While Ruth's family mourns her loss, they also celebrate her life knowing she is now safe in the arms of Jesus, who she accepted as her Lord and Savior.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11am in Salvation Apostolic Temple, Main Ave, Scranton. Interment, Forest Hill Cemetery, Dunmore. Friends may call Friday from 5-7pm in the McGoff-Hughes FH Inc, 1401 Capouse Ave, Scranton.
