Rachel A. Lunger, 61, Clarks Summit, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, at Geisinger CMC after a long, hard-fought battle with an illness. Born in Pittston on Oct. 19, she was the youngest of four daughters of the late Edward M. and Sarah Perins Bisbing. She was married to her husband, Robert Lunger, for 42 years.
Rachel was a graduate of Pittston Area High School. She called the Pittston area home until she met her husband, Robert, at Eckel Farms, which continued to be a huge part of their lives. They relocated to Lake Winola, where they spent 39 years raising their family. Rachel was a natural born caretaker. She thrived taking care of her husband and son, Spencer, but she was a hard worker too. She spent more than 10 years being the friendly face you see at Gerrity’s Clarks Summit. If you were a customer there, chances are you knew all about her son and her pride and joy -- her grandchildren. When she wasn’t working hard, you could always find her at her son’s sporting events -- from watching her son play basketball and golf at Tunkhannock Area High School and Keystone College to watching him coach at his high school alma mater. She was his No. 1 fan, and anyone that knew Rachel would agree. Some of her other passions were church, food, county fairs, shopping, and a good martini. She was kind and generous, always willing to help those in need.
Nothing brought Rachel more joy than her grandchildren, Addison and Rory. Her favorite pastime was spoiling them and talking about them to anyone who would listen. Even though she was battling illness for a while, she always showed up at their end-of-year school celebrations, sporting events, birthday parties, and more. They were the light of her life and the reason she fought for as long as she did.
Rachel is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Sarah, and sister, Alice Karboski.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years and partner in crime, Robert Lunger. In addition to her husband, she is survived by son, Spencer (Kelly) Lunger, grandchildren, Addison and Rory of Nicholson, twin sister, Rebecca (Bob) Fitzpatrick of Pittston, sister Elizabeth “Cookie” Coolbaugh of Pittston, sisters-in-law, Nancy (Mike) Fetcho of Clarks Summit, and Debby (Jon) Jaye of Oakland, N.J., and nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Scranton Canoe Club, just as Rachel would want.
Her family would like to thank the incredible staff at Geisinger CMC, DaVita Dialysis at Allied, and Dr. Lindsay Smith for their continuous care of Rachel over the years.
