Phaedra Gail Chmil, 41, of Scranton, had a seizure at home Thursday evening, and Jesus wrapped His arms around her and welcomed her into eternal rest.
Phaedra was the daughter of Debora Connolly Chmil and Bernard Chmil. Phaedra is survived by her son, Jacob, of Columbia, Pa.
Phae graduated from West Scranton High School in 1999 and lived her life as a free spirit. To those who truly knew her, Phaedra was a beautiful soul who had an outgoing and friendly personality. She was a mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.
Breaking ceilings was something Phaedra did from an early age. Phaedra was a home-run slugger and one of the first girls to play on the all-boys North Scranton Little League. She ran track and field in middle school. Phaedra loved skiing. Phae was a lifelong cheerleader, cheering for the North Scranton Vikings and then West Scranton High School. Once her cheerleading career ended at the academic level, Phaedra continued to be the loudest and proudest cheerleader for her friends and family. She also had a passion for fashion and beauty.
Phaedra’s most cherished love was Jacob. Jacob was her pride and joy. She loved him with a force that kept her fighting for her health and wellness.
Phae was a natural beauty who loved everyone with her whole heart, especially her nephews and niece. Through her teens, Phaedra did gymnastics, and she loved showing her niece the old routines.
Phaedra loved to spend summer days with the kids. The light that “Auntie Phae Phae” shone on them will be incredibly missed. She brought life and joy to the kids. Her loss will be one that is felt for years to come.
Phaedra had been in recovery for over twenty years. She was a courageous advocate for mental wellness and sobriety. Even though she relapsed throughout the years, Phaedra bravely got herself into recovery again and again. The true Phaedra was a woman of faith. She was compassionate, generous, thoughtful and funny.
Phaedra is also survived by her siblings: her brother, Corey; sisters, Autumn and Christa; her nephews, Levi, Lennon and Cole; her niece, Connelly Rose; her extended family, Jessica Chmil, Daniel Allan and Corey Duffy, Eric, Lynn and Julian Chmil, Holly Chmil Jones and Mark Jones; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Phaedra was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Rose Marie Koczwara Connolly and Thomas Connolly; paternal grandparents, Marjorie Musik Chmil and Ben Chmil.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of God Church, Scranton. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann’s St., Scranton, or starting at 9 a.m. in the church on Thursday.
