Paul N. Scarnato

Paul N. Scarnato, 73, of Dunmore, died Thursday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joy Scarnato. Born in Scranton, son of the late Gregg and Caroline Vakay Scarnato Sr., he was a dedicated member of St. Ann's Basilica and served as an usher for many years. Known amongst his family as "The Sarge in Charge," he was a professional "Electric Slider" and always the first one out on the dance floor when the song came on. Paul was a SSG in the US National Guard for 33 1/2 years and looked forward to training his young soldiers. He worked for 37 years at National Book in Dunmore, and after retirement worked part time for MORANCO Transportation. An avid golfer and Yankees fan, when it wasn't baseball season you were sure to catch him watching reruns of championship seasons, unless of course, he was watching the Army/Navy Game or basketball, especially during March Madness, which was one of his favorite times of year. Paul was a referee and umpire for the PIAA and ASA, which he thoroughly enjoyed doing for 49 years. Above all things, he was a family man who lived his life for his wife and children, and always put himself second. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends on the boat at Lake Wallenpaupack or at his daughter's home in Gouldsboro. He will be greatly missed by all. Also surviving are his son, Dominick Scarnato; daughter, Desiree Huffsmith and husband, John; brother, Gregg Scarnato and wife, Lori; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Flowers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at noon in St. Ann's Basilica. Interment with military honors, Dunmore Cemetery. Friends may call from 10-11:45am in the Thomas J Hughes FH Inc, 1240 St. Ann St, Scranton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation or any military organization.
