Born in Scranton on Nov. 7, 1943, son of Ruth (Gallagher) McAndrew and Vincent de Paul James McAndrew, Paul was educated at St. Ann’s Monastery School through grade 12. After graduating, he joined the United States Navy.
Paul was a wartime veteran who served on the USS Nitro, and received a commendation for a mission off Cuba in 1962. During his military career, he also performed benevolent work at the Brummana Boys Orphanage, helping to rebuild their damaged school and desks.
Paul received his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1965 and began working as a civilian retiree for the United States Army. He worked in this capacity, holding different positions and receiving multiple commendations, for 41 years until his retirement in 2006.
Upon his retirement, Paul worked tirelessly serving his parish at the Basilica of St. Ann in Scranton.
Paul married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Gibbons-McAndrew, on April 19, 1969, with whom he had five children. He was a devoted husband and father who sacrificed and worked hard to provide his children with the finest education and fulfilling their every desire. In his spare time, he worked and volunteered for United Cerebral Palsy in Scranton. He fostered a family in need every year at Christmas to provide gifts for their children. He cared for his elderly neighbors as long as he was physically able. His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family whom he adored, watching a good rainstorm and cruising the open sea. Paul was fighting a challenging battle with melanoma. He passed peacefully in his home on St. Ann’s Street, where he was raised from childhood, surrounded by his devoted wife and five adoring children.
Paul was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brother, Rev. Fr. Roy McAndrew, C. P.; and his sister, Mary Neary.
