Paul Hart

Paul Hart, 77, of Scranton, passed away on June 1. Born Nov 13, 1947, son of the late Paul Robert and Margaret Condon Hart, he was a member of St Ann's Basilica and a Cum Laude graduate from The University of Scranton. He moved on to pursue his Masters degree in History from Penn State University. Paul taught history for many years at the Abington Heights school district. He would say "I am retired longer than I taught school." He loved spending holidays with his family, whom he cherished. Paul was elected as the 13th President of the Lackawanna County Saint Patrick’s Parade Committee in 1985. As President, Paul Proudly led the 1986 Saint Patrick’s Parade march along with his Dad and Mom, through the Streets of Downtown Scranton. Paul has remained an active Parade Committee member right up unto the time of his death. Paul was among the first members appointed to the newly formed Lackawanna County Railroad Authority back in 1984-85. The Authority at the time was formed by the Lackawanna County Commissioners in order to preserve Rail Freight Service throughout Lackawanna County, and to assume ownership, at the time, of over 19 miles of abandoned mainline D&H Railroad, stretching North to South from one end of Lackawanna County to the other. Over the next 20 years, in addition to serving as an Authority Board Member, Paul served as an Officer in every capacity, including Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Chairman & Board Chairman. As a Railroad enthusiast Paul was for many years an active member and leader of (KARP) Keystone Association of Rail Passengers. He also continued to serve as an active member of both The Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railway Historical Society Inc. together with the National Railway Historical Society Inc. of Scranton and served as Membership Committee Chairman. Paul was also an occasional news contributor to their monthly Publication and Newsletter ‘Laurel Lines’ now celebrating 51 years. Like so many in our region, Paul looked forward to and lived for the day when the projected 2028 resumption of Passenger Rail Service to and from Scranton, would allow him to join with his many colleagues and friends, on the first departing Rail Passenger train traveling East, from Scranton, safely makes its way through the Pocono’s, New Jersey and on to its destination, New York City. He is survived by his dog, Shadow; cousins, Denise Dragon and husband, Dave, Factoryville; John Foley and wife, Joanne, Throop; Donna Nealon and husband, Joseph, Alexandria, VA; and John Marchese, New York City; and aunt, Winifred Padden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10am in St. Ann's Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Arrangements by Thomas J Hughes FH Inc, 1240 St. Ann's St, Scranton.

My condolences to Paul’s family and dearest friends. My favorite Paul saying was: (he was a true Union employee who fought for teachers’ rights and respect). “The Republican board members at Abington Heights want the most for their money, but they don’t want to pay for it!” (Negotiation time - I know he’d be glad I shared this! He was standing up for people in an underpaid profession! )
