Morris Cherkas

 

Morris G. Cherkas, 80, of Dickson City, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday, Dec. 19. Son of the late Alex and Gertrude Cherkas, he was a 1962 graduate of St. Paul's High School, Scranton. Morris proudly served his county in the United States Navy Seabee Division, was a member of Olyphant American Legion and a life member of VFW Post 25. An avid hunter and fishermen, Morris spent his life dedicated to his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his daughter, Colleen Deemer VanHousen and husband, Eric; three grandchildren, Brandon and fiancé, James Fox; Maura and partner, Jahmel Wadley; and Alex and wife, Briar; a great-grandchild, Rowan Deemer; and many friends, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Rae Cherkas; son, Scott Cherkas; and brothers, Linn and David Cherkas. The family would like to thank the loving staff of Green Ridge Care center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their love and compassion. A memorial service will be held Dec. 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton, PA 18509. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Sacred Heart.

Morrie was a great friend, co worker, hunting and fishing partner. We had some wonderful times together and made some wonderful memories I will never forget. Hope he is smiling with Rae and Scott and I know he'll always watch over the ones he left behind. Sorry for your loss Colleen you have had a tuff few years. Morris was a great teacher in all our fishing trips, from Delaware River to Lackawanna Park. Crazy trips into the woods for wild mushrooms. Dear friend just to ask a question or two. When you get a chance to know someone like him you cherish your time together . Rest in Peace my friend.
