Michael Calpin

 

Michael Calpin, 71, of the Minooka section of Scranton, died Saturday at Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family and friends. He and his wife, the former Mary Gallagher, celebrated their 50thwedding anniversary July 26th. Born in Scranton, the son of the late Thomas and Patricia O'Malley Calpin, he was a graduate of South Catholic and attended Penn State University. He was a member of the Divine Mercy Parish, Minooka. Prior to his retirement, Michael spent 25 years as a Scranton firefighter. Following retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to music, relaxing on the back porch and indeed, his daily trips to Gerrity’s Supermarket. A true handyman, he could fix or build anything. He loved his tools and loved having a reason to use them. He was everyone's first call if your car broke down or if something in your house needed to be fixed. Surviving are his two sons, Michael and fiancé Sandra Lopez, Scranton; Daniel and his wife Tiffany, Moosic; daughter Katie Harding and husband Thomas, Harrisburg; 3 brothers, Kevin Calpin, Minooka; Bob Calpin and wife Celeste; Minooka, John Calpin, Minooka; 2 sisters, Patty Regan and husband Jack, Bradenton Fl.; Mary Ellen Disilvio and husband Peter, Newfane, NY; sister-in-law, Ellen Kosar of Archbald and fiancé John Kearney; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Moran, two brothers James and Thomas Calpin and his brother-in-law, Michael Kosar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30am in Divine Mercy Parish, Davis St. Interment, private at the convenience of the family. Friends may call in the Church starting at 9am. Arrangements by Eagen-Hughes FH, 2908 Birney Avenue, Scranton.

I was saddened to hear of Mike's passing. It was a pleasure serving with him for 25 years at the Scranton Fire Dept. He was one of the good one's. RIP "Flatback"
