Mary Catherine “Katie” Layton, born December 12, 1957, entered the arms of her Lord and Savior on September 1, 2026. To know Katie was to know a woman who loved with her whole heart. She was a strong woman of faith, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was her entire world. She lived for her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren, and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for the people she loved. Katie had a heart and a spirit all her own. She was incredibly artistic and could make or craft just about anything. If she could imagine it, she could find a way to create it. Her hands were always busy making something beautiful, and so many of the things she created will remain as little pieces of her for her family to treasure. She also had a special love for Michael Jackson. His music could always bring a smile to her face, and it was just one of the many things that made Katie uniquely Katie. The greatest love story of her life was the one she shared with her husband, Willard “Bill” Layton. On September 26th, they would have celebrated 45 years of marriage. For nearly 45 years, Bill lovingly called Katie his “bride”—and she was, in every sense of the word. Their life together was filled with love, memories, challenges, laughter, and a bond that time could never break. She was his bride, his love, and his best friend. Katie leaves behind her husband, Willard “Bill” Layton; her son, Paul Mulgrew and his partner, Alexandra Rueda; her son, Willard “Billy” Layton; and her daughter, Marcy Peck and her husband, Edward. Along with her children, she leaves behind her siblings, Jackie, Paula, Robert, Vincent, and Jerry Mulgrew. Her greatest legacy lives on in her grandchildren, Sierra, Avery, Na’il, Elly, and Eddie, and in her great-grandchildren, Hudson and Atlas. They were her heart, her joy, and some of the greatest blessings of her life. The love she poured into each of them will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Katie was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Joseph Mulgrew; her father, Paul Mulgrew; and her mother, Patricia Mulgrew. There will never be enough words to describe what Katie meant to the people who loved her. She was one of a kind. She was strong when life asked her to be strong, loving when someone needed love, creative in everything she touched, and faithful through it all. Her family will miss her voice, her laugh, her stories, her creativity, and all the little things that made her presence feel like home. They will miss knowing she was just a phone call away. Most of all, they will miss simply having her here. But they will carry her with them—in the things she made, in the music she loved, in the memories she gave them, and in the love she so freely shared. And while their hearts are broken, they find comfort in knowing that Katie is exactly where she believed she would one day be: safely in the arms of her Lord and Savior. Funeral services will be held at New Life Baptist Church. 840 Harrison Ave, Scranton Pennsylvania 18510 at 1PM on Saturday, September 12th 2026.
