Mary Calpin, 73, of the Minooka section of Scranton, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Marywood Heights on May 20, 2026. She was the widow of Michael Calpin, who died on August 23, 2025. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 26th, 2025.
Born in Scranton, the daughter of the late James and Eleanor Gallagher, she was a graduate of West Scranton South Catholic High School. She was a member of the Divine Mercy Parish, Minooka.
Prior to her retirement, Mary was employed as a secretary for Northeast Intermediate School, where she made many friends and where she was affectionately known as the “Candy Lady”. She brought smiles to countless people with her kindness, warm spirit and generous heart.
In her free time, Mary loved spending time with her family and friends, reading her novels, enjoying the sunshine and swimming in her pool. One of Mary’s favorite pastimes was the casino; she was always ready for the next casino trip.
Surviving are her two sons, Michael and fiancé Sandra Lopez, Scranton; Daniel and wife Tiffany, Moosic; daughter Katie Harding and husband Thomas, Harrisburg; sister, Ellen Kosar Kearney and husband, John, Moosic ; 3 brothers-in-laws, Kevin Calpin, Minooka; Bob Calpin and wife Celeste; Minooka, John Calpin, Minooka; 2 sister in laws , Patty Regan and husband Jack, Bradenton Fl.; Mary Ellen Disilvio and husband Peter, Newfane, NY; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Kathy Moran, and her brother in laws Michael Kosar, James Calpin and Thomas Calpin.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, the staff at Marywood Heights and also her compassionate caregivers that made it possible for her to stay at her home as long as she could.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday June 6th at 10am at Divine Mercy Parish. Davis St. Interment private at the convenience of the family. Friends may call the church starting at 9am. Arrangements made by Eagen Hughes FH, 2908 Birney Avenue, Scranton
