Martin Patrick Judge Sr.

 

Martin Patrick Judge Sr., 91, of Scranton, died Sunday at home. Born in the Minooka section of Scranton, son of the late Edward Thomas and Celina Lally Judge, he was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the University of Scranton. A United States Army veteran who served stateside during the Korean War, Martin was employed by Lackawanna County Children and Youth Services as a supervisor of caseworkers for 25 years. His night "gig" was helping his father run the family business, Judge's Hotel and Café, in a building and business that was established in 1896 by his grandfather, Martin Patrick Judge. He grew up in a happy, bustling house filled with his parents, siblings, family friends, customers, while leaning from his aunts who were teachers at Minooka School. Surviving are five children, Anne Judge, Celene Judge; Little Marty and fiancée, Stephanie Ferrara, all of New York City; Katie Judge and husband, Jamie Cox, Cheshire, Conn.; Ellie Judge Vogt and husband, Mike Vogt, Benton, Pa.; five grandchildren, Gabe Vogt, Rosie Vogt, Danny Vogt, James Cox and Georgina Cox; his dog, Cooper Judge; and his devoted caregivers during the last year of his life, Allita "Mickey" Nicholoff and Alnisa Hardy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Corbett Judge; and their daughter, Julie Judge; all of his beloved four siblings, Marie Judge Prendergast, Jack "Duke" Judge, Sally Judge Sweeney and Billy Judge; all of his 22 Judge and Corbett in-laws; his brother-in-law, Bill Jordan; as well as four nephews, four nieces and a great-nephew. He was a lifelong, faithful parishioner of St. Joseph's Divine Mercy Parish and a proud member of the Democratic party. In 2013, he received a formal congratulations from Governor Tom Corbett (no relation) "for having voted consecutively at every November election for the last 50 years; for having demonstrated commitment to democracy, and for trusting and supporting the electoral process of this Commonwealth and the United States of America." In 1997, he was honored to lead the Scranton St. Patrick's Day Parade as Grand Marshal. He was also a member of the Lions Club and held different titles of rank at the Connolly American Legion Post, Minooka. He also served as the social director of the Beavers, Minooka Chapter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home, 2908 Birney Ave., Scranton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Defense Fund, a nonprofit agency that advocates for children's rights.
