Marjorie J. Grippa

July 28, 1930 to December 20, 2022

Marjorie J. Grippa, 92, of West Scranton passed away Tuesday, Dec. 20, with her daughters by her side. She was the widow of John G. Grippa of West Scranton, who died in 1998. Born July 28, 1930, to the late David and Elizabeth Evans James, she was a 1948 graduate of West Scranton High school where she sang with the advanced chorus and was a member of the cheerleading squad. She loved to travel when she was young and often told stories of her trips to Atlantic City and Hawaii with “the girls.” Marge had fond memories growing up as a child on Academy Street in West Side and then on Washburn Street in her teen years, with her three siblings. Prior to her marriage, she was employed by Burshel Dairy Co., where she met her beloved “Johnny” whom she married in 1968. Marge was an active member of Trinity Congregational Church United Church of Christ, West Scranton, where she taught Sunday school when her girls were young. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and served as a member of the Deaconite Board for many years. She was very proud of her Welsh heritage and enjoyed singing hymns in church. She lived independently until 2021. She loved to cook, bake Welsh cookies and babysit for her three grandchildren, and lately her oldest granddaughter, Liza, helped her take charge and play with the younger two. Her grandchildren were the light of her life! She enjoyed singing them songs, and barely missed a school play, a dance recital, a birthday party or any special event in their lives. They loved going to her house and enjoying the many snacks and Hershey kisses “Grammy” ALWAYS had on hand. Marge was the last surviving sibling of four, having been preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Davies; and brothers, JD and Curtis James. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Green, husband, Kevin, and grandchildren, Liza and Tyler Koch, of Spring Brook Twp.; and Lisa Rescigno, and granddaughter, Valya, of Dunmore; her beloved nieces, Barbara and Susan; and many extended family. The family would like to thank the third floor staff of St. Mary’s Villa Residence for being so kind and caring to Marge for the past year she resided there. Instead of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Abilities21 Special Needs Group in support of her grandson, Tyler, c/o FNCB, 921 Drinker Turnpike, Suite 26, Covington Twp., PA 18444. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Trinity Congregational Church, West Scranton,. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton.
