Marie Intoccia

Marie Intoccia, 90, of Scranton, died Thursday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart comforted by her family. She was the widow of the Eugene "Jeep" Intoccia, who died in 2015. She was born in the “Saint Lucy's” section of West Scranton to the late Angelo and Angelina Conte Garofalo. She was a graduate of West Scranton High School and became a dedicated member of St. Ann's Basilica once she married. Before retirement, she worked at Prudential Insurance, West Scranton Middle School cafeteria and Highlight Modeling. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with her family, shopping and dining out. Marie made her home the central gathering point for all of her family and friends, and she lovingly welcomed everyone on all holidays and gatherings. You never knew who was coming to dinner, and nobody ever left without a meal and a feeling of being welcome and loved. Known as the family matriarch and second mother to her Garofalo nephews and niece, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, godmother, aunt, great-aunt, great-great aunt, cousin and friend who will be deeply missed. Surviving are her children, Jean Marie McHugh, who was her caregiver, and her husband, Mike; Luann Van Auken and husband, Paul; and Joseph Intoccia and wife, Deborah. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Matthew Garofalo; sister, Frances Garofalo; and granddaughter, Anna Van Auken. Anna was the love of Marie's life, as she was Anna's noni and best friend. They had a loving and close relationship up to the time of Anna's untimely passing, and we know Anna greeted her in heaven and that they are catching up on lost time. The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice of the Sacred Heart and her caregiver and friend, Jene Lindsey. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann St., Scranton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Anna Van Auken Memorial, 1089 Blueberry Road, Falls, PA 18615.
