Marie Carol Almond, 86, of Orland Park, IL, passed away on 2-27-26. Born in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Theophilus (Tuffy) and Wanda Szajkowski. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, James F. Almond who passed away 10-21-1994. Carol was also preceded in death by her friend and partner, Louis W. Gomlick who passed away on 6-30-2019 and her brother, Thomas Szajkowski. She is survived by her son David Almond and his wife Tonya, as well as two grandsons, Jacksen and Brady. She was at best the Matriarch of the Pennsylvania family and leaves behind nieces, nephews, godchildren and cousins. Carol's parents passed away when she was 21. She relocated with friends to West Palm Beach, Florida. She married and was blessed with her son, David. Ready to leave behind the beaches and palm trees, the Almond family returned to Pennsylvania, anxious for David to know his aunts, uncles and cousins. She always loved the snowy winters and what she referred as the "hills of home." Eventually she assumed the role of "Matriarch" and enjoyed it to the fullest. Carol was employed for several years in the administrative offices at the Inn at Nichols Village and enjoyed the interaction with guests. She was a people person so when the opportunity presented itself to join Penn International Marine Agencies Ltd, she was on board. Her responsibilities involved managing an office in her home and traveling to many countries around the world attending maritime conventions and meeting with ship builders and ship owners. Carol had a passion for the outdoors. She especially enjoyed winter and winter sports like skiing and ice skating. She skied well into her seventies. She loved spending time with family and friends and coming home to a beautiful backyard oasis of flowers and bird feeders. Carol was a caring wife and loving mother. In her most recent retirement years, she was very happy to finally move into her grandmother stage. Her son, David, relocated his mother to a lovely suburb in Illinois, close enough to get hugs from her grandsons, Jacksen and Brady whenever she wanted. She is lovingly known as "Bachie" and is so proud of her son, David, and his wife, Tonya. She loved being part of their life; baseball games, family dinners, holidays and all the gatherings that warm a "Bachies" heart. A mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, March 5th at 1:00pm in St. Ann's Basilica, 1233 St. Ann's Street, Scranton, PA. Family and friends may call from 11:00am to 12:45pm in the Thomas J. Hughes Home, 1240 St. Ann's Street, Scranton, PA. Internment St. Peter's and Paul's Cemetery, Taylor.

We were deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Your mother was a beautiful woman, both inside and out. From the moment she moved into our building, she greeted everyone with kindness, warmth, and that unforgettable smile. She was always so grateful for even the smallest favor, and her gentle presence made our building a better place.
We will miss her dearly and will keep her and your family in our prayers. May her memory be a blessing and a source of comfort in the days ahead.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Ralph & Jan Russotto

Carol was one the sweetest woman I ever knew. We worked together at Nichols Village for many, many years. Everyone loved her as did I. My wife and I have stayed in touch with Carol over the many years since we sold the hotel.

Dear David and family, I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing! I am keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. I'm sorry I didn't know, or I would have been at her service. As others have said, she was a beautiful person inside and out. She was always so kind to my dad, her "Uncle Al". I'm wishing you peace, and though right now you are processing your loss, the love she gave to you will stay with you. In time sadness will be replaced by gratitude that she was... that she was your Mom. With sincere sympathy, Cousin Belle.

Dave, Jackson and Brady sorry for the lost of your Mom (BABCHE) Carol. Just to let you know that we grew up durning our younger years (in Polish patch) together. I remember going up the block to see Uncle Tuffy and my two cousins Carol and Tom Szajkowski. My sister Barbara was the first born of the cousins and Carol was second. Carol allows had a friendly personality. The one she kept throughout her life.
Her brother Tom and myself were the same age and over time we saw each other often as we shared the same friends.
Although I didn’t have the privilege of more involvement with you as a family because of the distance.
I still want to express my deepest sympathy to you and family for the loss of your Mom
Cousin Judy
