Margarite M. "Peg" Peters

Margarite M. "Peg" Peters, 90, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on July 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of four generations of her family. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Salerno Calorico. Peg was the devoted wife of former Scranton Mayor Eugene Peters. Together, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June. During her husband's eight years as mayor, Peg graciously served as the First Lady of Scranton, representing the city with warmth, dignity, and humility. Known for her radiant smile and striking red hair, Peg possessed a gentle spirit and a kind heart. She never spoke an unkind word about anyone and treated everyone she met with compassion and grace. Following an injury, she became a resident of Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center, where she remained steadfast in her faith. Rarely without a cross in her hand, Peg considered it one of life's greatest blessings to live as a devoted Christian and maintained a lifelong devotion to Saint Padre Pio. Peg was a gifted pianist and cellist whose love of music enriched her life and those around her. She also delighted family and friends with her exceptional Middle Eastern and Italian cooking, creating meals that became treasured traditions. Before her marriage, she was employed by Beneficial Finance Company. During her years as First Lady, she served as secretary to the Engineers' Society and was a member of the Board of Directors of Community Concerts. She was also a member of the St. Ann Maronite Church Sodality and the Scranton Jaycettes. Peg is survived by her loving husband, Eugene Peters; and their five children: Attorney Joseph Peters (and former wife, Lisa), Carol Peters, Lynn Peters Thiel (and her husband, Attorney Michael Thiel), Gregory Peters, and Dr. David Peters (and his wife, Maureen). She was a devoted grandmother to Attorney Max Peters (and his wife, Laura), Attorney Lexi Thiel, Michael Thiel, Jason Thiel, Evan Peters, Steven Peters, and Nicole Robinson (and her husband, Nick and children, Greysen and Kinsley Elliott.) In her final months, her greatest joy was spending time with her precious great-granddaughter, Charlie Margarite, who brought immeasurable light to her life. In addition to her parents, Peg was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Janet Summa. The Peters family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff and administration of the Fourth Floor South at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center for the exceptional care, kindness, and dignity they provided throughout Peg's stay. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home, 1401 Capouse Avenue, Scranton. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann Maronite Church, 1320 Price Street, Scranton. Those attending the funeral service are asked to meet at St. Ann Maronite Church. Interment, Sacred Heart Lebanese Cemetery
