John Topa

John Topa, 83, of Scranton, died Sunday surrounded by his loving and devoted family at home in the house he built 57 years ago. In 1962, he and his wife, Marion Lewis Topa, committed to a lifetime of marriage built on precious memories with each other, their surviving daughters, Denise Truesdale and Maria Kerrigan, three grandchildren, Iain, Evan, and Caelan Kerrigan, son-in-law, Robert Truesdale, Maria’s fiancé, Michael Leone, and the grandchildren’s father, Joseph Kerrigan. Born in Scranton, son of the late Alexander and Margaret Ruachak Topa, John is survived by one sister (Laura Pilger) and was preceded in death by two brothers (Alex and Peter Topa) and two sisters (Francis Golesh and Stephanie DiVecchia). John is also survived by nieces and nephews. John developed his superior work ethic early in high school as he mastered the carpenter trade working multiple jobs simultaneously to support his family. His daughters are eternally grateful to John for teaching them how to work hard while genuinely caring for others and valuing family. Despite his rigorous carpentry work schedule and jobs at Jaunty Fabric and Panel Prints, John always found the time to spend with his family. He lived his life to the fullest joking and laughing as he enjoyed one-week vacations at the shore, his antique car collection, organ playing, Walt Disney World trips, the New York Yankees, and eating out at his favorite restaurants. As a dedicated member of St. Ann’s Basilica, John instilled in his family the power of prayer and faith in daily life and in his final moments. Our family is abundantly appreciative of the medical guidance and spiritual support of Dr. Michele Hazzouri, Dr. Linda Barrasse, Lankenau Hospital, and Fr. Richard Burke. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:00 AM in St. Ann’s Basilica. Internment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Thomas J Hughes Funeral Home Inc, 1240 St. Ann’s Street in Scranton.
