John P. "Jack" Hendry

While being surrounded by love and prayers, holding the hand of his beloved wife, Nellie, John P. "Jack" Hendry passed away peacefully on March 1st at the age of 85. Jack was born in 1939 to the late Porter and Lillian Spearmint Hendry, and his loving stepfather Samuel Spearmint. Jack spent his early youth in Palm City Florida, and moved to Scranton when he was 7. Jack left high school early to join the workforce. He had a strong work ethic, working in many different fields. Most of his working years were spent as an industrial mechanic at the Grove Silk Mill. He and his wife also owned and operated two local taverns until "retirement." It did not last long, as the pair delivered newspapers well into their seventies. In his younger years, Jack excelled at softball and participated in many leagues. He was known as "Southpaw" to his teammates. An avid Red Sox and Penn State fan, Jack loved hosting his Saturday poker games and was very proud of his many vegetable gardens. He was an animal lover and could often be seen driving around town with his beloved dogs. Jack loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in their many sports and activities. One of his favorites was wrestling. He never missed the opportunity to cheer on his sons and grandsons from the West Scranton bleachers. Jack married the love of his life, Nellie Mae Townend in 1963. They recently celebrated 61 years of a marriage filled with love and companionship. Together they loved and raised their four children, Eugene, John Jr (Sheri), Patricia (Bill) and enjoyed their ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas and a sister, Evelyn Walush. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Oakridge Nursing Home, especially Pop's third floor angels. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11am in the Thomas J Hughes FH Inc, 1240 St. Ann St, Scranton. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Friends may call starting at 9:30am
