
Joan Haefele, 79, of Scranton, died Wednesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She was the widow of Frederick J. Haefele, who died Jan 2, 1999. Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late Lawrence and Angela Portanova Hartshorn, she was a graduate of Dunmore High School and a member of Peckville Assembly of God Church. Before retirement, she was employed by TMG Health and H&R Block. Joan enjoyed spending winters in Florida with her husband, along with bowling and quilting. A former EMT who served as a mom to all who entered her home, Joan cherished attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia J. Haefele, with whom she resided; and Judith A. Slagus and husband, Michael W., Moscow; seven grandchildren, Michael Slagus and wife, Kristin, Williamsport; Timothy Slagus and wife, Amanda, Olyphant; Jason, Dunmore; Brittney Haefele and fiancé, Brandon Allan; Jennifer Slagus and Josh Palange, Tampa, Fla.; and Matthew F. and Jessica J. Slagus, both of Moscow; five great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Gabriella, Lilah and Haileigh Slagus, and Logan Allan; a sister, Florence Moss, Moscow; two brothers, William Hartshorn and wife, Mary Ann, Dunmore; and Lawrence Hartshorn, Scranton; nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Peckville Assembly of God Church. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton.
