Jimmy J. Scanlon

Jimmy J. Scanlon, a devoted family man, skilled tradesman, and lifelong adventurer, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, passion, and an enduring curiosity for the world around him. Born to Elizabeth and James A. Scanlon, Jimmy was a proud graduate of Central High School. After graduation, he began his professional journey as a welder in Connecticut. Through determination, skill, and perseverance, he worked his way up to an engineering position, earning the respect of colleagues and peers alike. Jimmy's adventurous spirit was a defining trait. He was an avid pilot and a passionate outdoorsman who once hiked the entire Appalachian Trail—a true testament to his love of nature and personal challenge. He had a deep appreciation for history and was actively involved in Civil War reenactments, as well as genealogical research that connected him to his roots. Travel was one of Jimmy’s greatest joys. He loved exploring new places, meeting people, and learning about different cultures. After retiring, he brought that same enthusiasm to his role as a tour guide at the Lackawanna Coal Mine, where he found deep fulfillment in educating visitors about mining history and the region’s heritage. A true animal lover, Jimmy especially adored dogs and found companionship and joy in their presence throughout his life. Jimmy was preceded in death by his brother Glen, and his beloved parents, Elizabeth and James Scanlon. He is survived by his son Devin, his stepson Nick, his sister Elisabeth, and his brothers Gary and Brian. He also leaves behind his nephews Jerry, Zachary, Jake , William nieces Amber, Molly and several treasured grandnephews and grandnieces. Jimmy J. Scanlon will be remembered for his warmth, sharp mind, generous heart, and adventurous soul. His presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Viewing will be private at the convenience of the family.

We were blessed to meet Jim when we moved into the same apartment complex. He shared his love of dogs with us and we became “ furry animal grandparents”. We lost a true friend when he moved to be closer to family, but he made sure to keep in touch. We were saddened by the news of his passing. RIP Jim.

The sad news of Jim’s untimely departure hit me like a ton of bricks. Very sad news indeed. We worked together on-&-off since 1990 all the way up to his retirement. He was a very talented man of many trades, but there are other people who can claim that. But how many of us know somebody who became a self taught electrical and control system engineer nowadays? I should stress this, Engineer with a capital “E”? JIm was one of the most valuable members of the team developing new types of highly automated machinery. It was most certainly a pleasure to work with him on the projects. Always smiling, not holding anything back, ready to help. He was also a good friend even when we were far apart geographically. I have a collection of the holiday greetings from him, always kind but also humorous and witty. On my list of places to visit is that old mine in Pennsylvania where Jim was giving tours to visitors. The place is still on the list, but my tour guide-to-be is not there anymore, how sad. Thank you for being part of my life, dear friend. People like you make the world a better place. You deserve a good rest, may you rest in peace. Your friend and colleague Mikhail.
