
Jean Lynott Kinney, of Scranton, died Wednesday surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, the late James L. Kinney, who passed away in 2011.
A lifelong resident of St. Ann’s Street, she was born in Scranton, daughter of the late Thomas and Helen O’Boyle Lynott. She was a member of St. Ann’s Basilica Parish. Jean was a graduate of St. Ann’s High School and Marywood College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. Prior to becoming a homemaker, she worked as an elementary school teacher in the Scranton School District. She was a member of the Moses Taylor Hospital Auxiliary, the Scranton Club and the Country Club of Scranton.
Together with her husband, they built a beautiful life for their family full of love and laughter. Jean was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, known affectionately as Jeje by her beloved grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her generosity and kindness knew no bounds.
In addition to her family, her friendships and faith were paramount to her. She was a thoughtful, dedicated and loyal friend, who touched the lives of many. Throughout her life, her steadfast commitment and devotion to her faith was an example for all to follow.
Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Kinney, Scranton; Jean Quinn and husband, John, Collegeville; and Jane Blackledge and husband, Shawn, Scranton; eight grandchildren, CJ Gatto, New York City; Kayla Gatto, Dunmore; James, Colin, Aidan and Caroline Quinn, all of Collegeville; Corey Blackledge, Philadelphia; and Matthew Blackledge, Scranton; and a beloved cousin and friend, Mary Frounfelker.
She was preceded in death by her son, James L. Kinney Jr.; and an infant daughter, Mary Lynott Kinney.
The Kinney family would like to express their deepest thanks and appreciation to Dr. Michele Hazzouri, as well as Jean’s dedicated caregivers, Linda Ferrari, Clara Ramos and Jackie Miller, for their friendship and exceptional care. The family also extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Allied Services Hospice Center for their kind and compassionate care.
The funeral will be Monday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. in St. Ann’s Basilica. Private Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann’s St., Scranton.
