Janet M. Timlin
March 8, 2023
Janet M. Timlin of the Minooka section of Scranton died Wednesday at home after an extended illness while surrounded by her family. She is now reunited in heaven with her husband Thomas R. Timlin II who passed away six (6) months ago. The couple would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in February.
Born in Scranton, Janet was the youngest of eleven (11) children born to Christopher and Agnes (Powell) Barber. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and a 1954 graduate of South Catholic High School. Before beginning her family, Janet worked at General Electric.
Janet’s family was the focus of her life and she graciously accepted the role of matriarch at an early age. She always put the needs of others ahead of her own, whether it was taking care of her brothers, her nieces and nephews, her children or her grandchildren. Janet will be remembered most for her selflessness and patience. The favorite part of Janet’s day was the time she sat at her kitchen table sipping a cup of tea with whoever happened to be visiting. Because her home was always open to close friends and family, those visits were frequent and she deeply cherished the company. Even though Janet never really attempted to influence other’s opinions or behavior, when asked for advice she had a calming way of making challenging decisions very manageable. Although her golden years were interrupted by chronic illness, Janet battled her health issues with grace and dignity.
Because her husband often traveled for work, Janet’s days were consumed with raising the couple’s seven (7) children. Although most people today dread the duties of being a homemaker, Janet was a consummate perfectionist. Janet was always involved in her children’s many activities, including the PTA, Girl Scouts, and the Minooka Little League. In addition to spending time with her family, she enjoyed bowling and swimming.
Also surviving are Janet’s seven (7) children, Maureen Timlin Flynn and husband, Robert, Scranton; Sharon Pugliese and husband, Carl, Moosic; Janet Rafalko, Scranton; Thomas R. Timlin III and wife, Leah, Clarks Summit; Brenda Padden and husband, Patrick, Scranton; Melinda Finnerty and husband, John, Scranton, and Denise Timlin and companion, James Cerep, Scranton; twelve (12) grandchildren, Casey (Flynn) Petroshuk and husband, John, Moosic; Maura (Flynn) Bidwell and husband, Chad, Scranton; Brianna Pugliese, North Abington Township; Samantha (Rafalko) Francis and husband, John, Scranton; Thomas R. Timlin IV, Conshohocken; Carl Pugliese, Scranton; Nicole Rafalko, Conshohocken; Daniel Timlin, Hoboken; Haileigh Finnerty, Cecilia Finnerty, Jake Finnerty and Gavin Finnerty, Scranton; and six (6) great-grandchildren, Ella, Anna and Mia Petroshuk, Grace and Flynn Bidwell and Sofia Francis, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and in-laws Rose and Joseph Walsh, Gerald and Judith Timlin, James and Cynthia Timlin, and Dennis and Zita Timlin. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law John Rafalko, three (3) sisters, Mary McDonough, Rose Marie Craft and Ann Rogers, and seven (7) brothers, Christopher Barber, Edward Barber, Jack Barber, Miles Barber, Francis Barber, Donald Barber, and Joseph Barber.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Janet’s exceptional personal care providers, Allied Home Health, Allied Hospice and Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Nativity of our Lord Church, St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard Street, Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Jonathon Kuhar.
