
James P. McDonnell, 94, passed away on Monday morning. James was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ann Moran McDonnell in 2015.
Born in Minooka, son of the late James P. and Mary Cusick McDonnell, he was a member of the inaugural class of South Scranton Catholic High School and earned a degree in accounting from the University of Scranton. Upon graduation, he entered the Army and attended The Adjuntant General School. He was then assigned to the United Nations Command–Military Armistice Commission headquartered at Panmunjon, Korea, where he participated in recording the Korean Peace Talks. He received the Army Commendation medal from U.S. Rear Admiral Walter F. Brittain, and later received a Letter of Commendation from Special U.S. Ambassador Arthur Dean for his participation in recording the final Korean Peace Talk.
Upon his return, he was employed by the General Accounting Office in Washington DC and the NCUA. He eventually established a private accounting practice. During his 60 years of marriage with Ann, they enjoyed travel and their many family gatherings. His greatest enjoyment was the time spent with Ann, their children, and grandchildren. He was a dedicated and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.
James was a lifelong member at St. Joseph Church at Divine Mercy Parish, Scranton. He was a member of American Legion Post 568, Minooka, the AOH and IAM organizations and the PG&W Golf League.
Surviving are his two sons, Jim and wife, Maryrose, Scranton; Patrick and wife, Maria, Scranton; two daughters, MaryEllen and husband, John Docalovich, Roaring Brook; Lori and husband, Jeff Carpenetti, Moosic; grandchildren, Mitchell McDonnell (Jenn Pollock), Catherine McDonnell (Jordan Rowe), John and wife, Kaylee Docalovich, Caelin and James Docalovich; and great-grandson, John “Jack” Docalovich.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Sister James Marie, Ad P.P.S., Marie Conlon, Joseph and John McDonnell.
The family would like to give their appreciation to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11am in Divine Mercy Parish, Davis St. Interment, St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call in the Church starting at 10am. Arrangements by Eagen-Hughes FH, 2908 Birney Ave., Scranton.
