Helen (Connor) Bauman, 94, of Scranton, died Wednesday at Allied Skilled Nursing. She was the widow of Joseph Bauman, whom she shared 66 years of marriage before his passing in 2015 - a partnership rooted in faith, love, devotion to family, and service to their community.
Born January 15, 1932, in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Frances Connor; and the stepdaughter of Mary Connor. Helen was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of St. Paul’s Church, where she worked for 25 years and volunteered faithfully. She especially cherished helping with the annual Block Party, serving as co chair alongside her husband and giving countless hours to the parish community. Together with her husband, Helen also volunteered with the Scranton Area Council PTA and organized the first PTA Savings Stamp Program in the United States, in cooperation with the State PTA Congress and the National Congress of PTAs.
Helen dedicated many years to the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a Den Mother and leader for Cub Scout Scranton Pack 81, working side by side with her husband. Her commitment to scouting was recognized with several honors, including the Den Leader Training Award, the district’s highest honor, the Award of Merit, and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council’s highest distinction, the Silver Beaver Award.
Alongside her devotion to God and service to the community, Helen was an avid fisherman, devoted gardener, a gifted artist, and a lover of old western movies, puzzles and playing solitaire. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family.
Surviving are her children, Joseph Bauman Jr. and wife Evelyn; Frances S. Bauman; Kathleen Soboleski and husband, Joseph; Michael G. Bauman and wife, Janice; Gerald Bauman; and John Bauman and wife, Tami; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister, Bettie Kurty and husband James; 1 niece; 1 nephew; and 2 great-nieces. Helen was a deeply loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Helen’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and caretakers of Allied Skilled Nursing and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their love and exceptional care.
