
It is with heavy hearts we announce the loss of Geraldine Ann Gilligan, 91, of Virginia, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Oct. 10, 2023, at Poet's Walk Memory Care community in Warrenton, Virginia. She was the widow of John J. Gilligan, who passed away in 1996.
Born in Scranton, the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Margaret Brown Gavin, she was a graduate of Saint Paul's High School and was employed as a bookkeeper with PNC bank until her retirement.
Geraldine was known for her strong faith and devotion to God and to her family. She was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish, where she attended daily Mass for many years. She was kind to everyone and quick to help anyone and everyone who was in need, whether it be a ride to church or to a doctor's appointment, volunteering at the church, Pennsylvania Right to Life and countless other corporal works of mercy. Geraldine was also known for her quick wit and love of card games and bingo as well as her fiercely independent streak well into her late 80's.
She is survived by her four children, Cheryl Martonik and husband, Joseph, Jessup; Elaine Cranford, Warrenton, Va.; John Gilligan and wife, Deirdre, Fairfax, Va.; and Dorothy Stashick and husband, Anthony, Clifton, Va. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Matthew Martonik and wife, Eva Peris; Joseph Martonik and wife, Maureen; Lee Cranford and fiancée, Holly Thomas; Gavin Cranford, John, Tara and Stella Gilligan, and Samantha Stashick; brother-in-law, Thomas Gilligan and wife, Patricia; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and brothers, Eugene Gavin (Bonnie), Joseph Gavin (Kathy) and Leo Gavin (Dorothy); as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, William Gilligan (Rita), Marion Gilligan, James Gilligan and Carol Mikan; nephew, Charles Gavin; and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff at Poet's Walk and Capital Care Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in Mary, Mother of God Church, William Street, Scranton, Pa.
Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home, 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton. If you would like to make a donation in Geraldine's name, please make those to Pennsylvanians for Human Life, 400 Wyoming Ave., Scranton, PA 18503.
