Father Vincent Boney, C.P.

 

Father Vincent Boney, a Passionist priest of the St. Paul of the Cross Province of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, died at the Passionist Immaculate Conception Monastery in Jamaica, New York on June 9, 2025. He was 96 years of age at the time of his death, born on August 4,1928. A native of Mt. Vernon, New York, Father Boney was the son of the late Joseph Michael Boney and Emily Celiax Boney. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Michael Boney and his sister-in-law Betty, his sister, Mary Lou Renson and Jim Renson, and his nephews Thomas and Gerald. In addition to the members of his Congregation, Father Boney leaves his many living beloved nephews and nieces – Joseph and Nancy Boney, Patrick and Amparo Boney, Elizabeth and Greg Ellal, Daniel and Monique Boney, and Karen Boney (Thomas’s wife). Fr. Vincent also leaves many grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues. Fr. Boney attended high school at Wethersfield High School in Wethersfield, Connecticut from 1943-1944 and Holy Cross Seminary in Dunkirk, New York from 1944-1947. He then entered the Passionist novitiate and initiated collegiate studies and formation for ministry as a Passionist at Holy Cross College in Dunkirk, New York in 1947. Between 1947 and 1957, Fr. Boney completed his collegiate studies and, having enrolled in graduate studies at Catholic University of America, he earned in 1960 a Master of Arts degree in Greek and Latin languages. Fr. Boney completed his extensive academic studies in 1971 having earned a second Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Psychology and Counseling at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. Fr. Boney’s First Profession of Passionist vows was on August 15, 1950 at St. Paul Monastery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and his Final Profession occurred on August 15, 1953. Father Boney was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1957 at St. Michael’s Church in Union City, New Jersey by Most Reverend Cuthbert O’Gara, C.P. Between 1960 until his death Fr. Boney shared his many gifts through Passionist ministry as a priest, teacher, jail chaplain, advocate for developmentally challenged individuals, Associate Retreat Director, pastoral counselor, spiritual director, member of retreat team ministry, and preacher/facilitator of parish retreats and missions. During the last 37 years of his Passionist life, Fr. Boney was a much beloved presence in Scranton, Pennsylvania at St. Ann Passionist Monastery. Fr. Boney always loved a good joke and enjoyed traveling by car covering many miles over the years. Throughout his years of ministry Fr. Boney was engaged in various Church societies, commissions and professional boards. His membership in CUSA – an apostolate of persons with chronic illness or disability – was of special importance to Fr. Boney. He served his Passionist Province on a Province Commission concerning Contemplative-Apostolic Life, as Chairperson of the Advisory Board for Preaching Ministry, and the Mission Band for Itinerant Preachers. Fr. Boney also published articles in Priest Magazine in 1977 and 1993 and also in the journal The Catholic World. The Passionist Community in Jamaica, New York will remember and conduct memorial services for Fr. Boney on Monday evening, June 16, 2025 at 7:00pm in the Immaculate Conception Monastery Chapel after which Fr. Boney’s body will be transferred to the Basilica of St. Ann in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Wake Services will be held at the Basilica on the morning of Friday, June 20, 2025 at 10:00am followed at 11:00am by a Mass of the Resurrection in the Basilica. Immediately after the Mass Fr. Boney will be laid to rest in the St. Ann Monastery cemetery.
