Ellen Flynn

Ellen Flynn, 87, of Scranton, passed away Friday. She was the widow of Jerome Flynn, who passed away in 2010. Born in Scranton, the youngest daughter of the late William and Agnes Reilly Gallagher, she was a graduate of South Catholic High School and a member of St. Paul's Church. She worked for General Electric in Scranton, where she met Jerome. They married in 1962 and began their family. In 1972, Jerome had a devastating stroke and Ellen became his devoted caregiver, ensuring that his needs and that of her young family were always met. Ellen credited her community, relatives and strong faith with getting her through this difficult time. In later years, Ellen worked at Cleanrite Cleaners. Ellen was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed many celebrations with her family. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family as well as attending many events of her children and grandchildren. She was active in many local clubs and enjoyed getting together with her many friends. She enjoyed bowling and was involved in many leagues throughout the years. Surviving are her children, Kathleen (Tom) Barrett, Marie (Paul) Boyd, Joseph Flynn, Michael Flynn, Trish (Jim) Kyle, and daughter in-law, Lynn Flynn; grandchildren, Caroline and Julia Barrett, Reilly and Mollie Boyd, Brianna, Morgane, Isabella, Maggie, Daniel, John and Anna, Flynn and Nora, Nolan and James Kyle; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by son, Jerome; and her four sisters, Mary Connolly, Ann Bohan, Joan Green and Carol Gallagher; and six brothers, Paul, Hubert, James, William, Francis and Joseph Gallagher; and most recently her niece, Maureen Curry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Church, Penn Avenue. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton. The family would like to thank the staff at Scranton Health Care Center for the wonderful care, and all her wonderful friends at Goodwill at North Apartments. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St Joseph's Center.

Ellen was my friend and neighbor at Goodwill at North. We shared great experiences at parties, and dinners. Ellen was a very happy, funny lady. I loved being in her company. She was definitely a bright light and a great friend. She will be missed.
