Elizabeth O'Connor

 

Elizabeth O’Connor, of Scranton, passed away peacefully Monday evening at Marywood Heights surrounded by her loving family. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of Edward and Marie Lavelle Coyne. Bettywas a devoted member of St. Ann’s Basilica Parish serving as a Eucharistic minister, member of the Parish Council, Ladies of the Basilica, St. Ann’s prayer group and the church choir. Betty graduated as valedictorian and class secretary from St. Ann’s Monastery High School in 1948. She went on to graduate from Lackawanna Business College, Scranton. Betty was employed in the business office of Mercy Hospital for 23 years and was on the Board of Directors of SAMP Federal Credit Union, serving as board secretary for 25 years. A gentle woman of great faith, Betty attended mass daily and set a great example for us all, believing wholeheartedly in the power of prayer and that with God at her side, all things were possible. Betty enjoyedattending school functions, sporting events and activities of her grandchildren and was their biggest cheerleader. In her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling with her sisters and sister-in-law, her best friends. She is survived by three daughters, Peggy Irving andhusband, Ed, Scranton; Susan Magnotta, Scranton; and Maureen Archer andhusband, Jeff, Roaring Brook; two sons, Paul, Dunmore; and Thomas and partner, Paul Nardone, Scranton. She is also survived by her sisters, Ann Cummings, Scranton; Eileen Haggerty, Dunmore; and sister-in-law, Carol O’Connor. Betty is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Patrick and wife, Maura Irving; Brian and wife, Becky Irving; Erin Irving and Shawn Irving; Laura and husband, Kevin McGarry; Leigh and husband, William Fennie; Maria Magnotta and Rock Magnotta, Jason Archer and Ryan Archer; Caitlyn O’Connor and fiancé, Nick Murray; and Matthew O’Connor. Also, nine great-grandchildren, Mia, Maggie and Max Irving, Brogan and Ivy Irving, Jack and Alice McGarry, William and Andrew Fennie. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Rock Magnotta; sisters, Mary Mellon and Sister Joan Coyne, I.H.M.; and brothers, Robert and John Coyne. As Betty’s family, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Marywood Heights family for taking such great care of Mom over these past few years. The funeral will be held Thursday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.in St. Ann’s Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. I was heartbroken to read of my friend Betty's passing. I was lucky to have had the Coyne/O'Connor family come into my life so many years ago. We all lost a beautiful person. She will always be remembered in our hearts and prayers.
