Elizabeth (Betty) Buckley Gavin

 

Elizabeth (Betty) Buckley Gavin, 86, of Scranton, died Tuesday at Geisinger Community Medical Center. She was the widow of Thomas Francis (Frank) Gavin. Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late William and Catherine Egan Buckley, she was a graduate of West Scranton High School and a longtime member of St. Ann’s Basilica. She was a dedicated member of their Ladies Auxiliary and volunteer for the annual Novena. Elizabeth was also a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Scranton School District PTA for 50 years. She was a loving grandmother to her 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with one on the way. Her happiest memories were spent watching many sporting activities, dance recitals and school functions. Elizabeth treasured the time she spent with Helene May, who was more of a sister than sister-in-law. Even though she lived in West Scranton, her heart belonged in the Bellevue section of Scranton. Surviving are her five children, Mary Kaye Bucciarelli and husband, Anthony, Moscow; Thomas Gavin Jr. and wife, Lynn, Dunmore; Linda McGowan and husband, William, Scranton; Anne Domanish and husband, Michael, Elmhurst Twp.; and William Gavin and wife, Rebecca, Scranton; 13 grandchildren, Maura McGuire and husband, Robert; Maria Chando and husband, Matt; Marcie Costantino and husband, Matt; Elizabeth McGowan; Meghan McGowan and fiancé, Marc; Gavin McGowan and fiancée, Jenna; William McGowan; Delia Gavin; Amy and Matthew Domanish; and Thomas, Cole and Grace Gavin; four great-grandchildren, Emilia and Ethan McGuire; Connor and Colin Chando; and Baby Girl Costantino; sister-in-law, Helene May; brother-in-law, Michael Abdalla; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Buckley and wife, Dolores; and sisters, Marie Kreis and husband, Robert; Catherine Abdalla; Molly and Joseph Kincel; Elizabeth and Lawrence Miner; Anne and Jerome Burke; John J. May; and Anthony and Paul Paskert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Ann’s Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc, 1240 St. Ann’s St., Scranton. Donations can be made in her memory to St. Ann’s Basilica.
