E. Richard Snyder

E. Richard Snyder of Taylor died Tuesday at Oak Ridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center following an illness. Born in Scranton, son of the late Eugene R. and Jeanne Elizabeth Snyder, he was a member of St. Ann's Basilica. Educated in St. Ann's Monastery School, he was a graduate of West Catholic High School and the University of Scranton. Before retirement, he had been employed as a painter at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. Richard had a deep and abiding love for the outdoors. Whether he was out in the woods during hunting season or simply taking in the quiet beauty of nature, he felt most at peace under an open sky. He cherished the early mornings spent in a deer stand, the hours of time spent playing his turkey call, the adventures of fishing at Lake Winola and the camaraderie of Newton Ransom. Richard’s appreciation for the natural world was something he passed down, teaching those closest to him not just the skills of the hunt, but the respect, patience, and gratitude that come with it. He also maintained a lifelong friendship with his high school buddies-known as the Academy-who always relished his sharp wit. Surviving are two brothers; Stephen and wife, Melody Snyder and James P. Snyder, both of Scranton; one niece, Rebekah, and four nephews, Matthew (Toni), Ethan (Mackenzie), Nicholas (Brittany) and Andrew (Jennifer) Snyder; great nieces, and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at noon in St. Ann's Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call from 10:30am-11:45am at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann's Basilica, 1239 St. Ann's St., Scranton.
