
Dennis Grendel, 69, of the Minooka section of Scranton, passed away Thursday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit with his loving wife by his side. He and his wife, Patty would have celebrated 48 years of marriage on June 28.
Born in Wheeling W.V., son of the late Frederick and Stella Grendel, he was a graduate of Tridelphia High School and attended college in Wheeling. Prior to retirement, he worked in retail management for JC Penney’s for over 25 years, Dick’s Sporting Goods and TJ Maxx. Dennis was a member of the Minooka Lions Club, where he held multiple positions and was presently the acting secretary. He played in the APA pool leagues, Minooka golf leagues, and softball and basketball teams. Dennis was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, the American Legion Post 568 in Scranton and a devout fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates.
Dennis loved being with his family, especially his grandkids, Kayla and Jerry. He had a great personality, contagious laugh and was fun to be around. Always one to make friends easily, he will be missed by all who knew him.
Also surviving are his daughter, Jane Connolly and husband, Gerald, Moosic; sister, Carol Gruen, California; niece, Samantha Olson, Texas; and several others.
He was preceded in death by his two sons, Matthew and Patrick Grendel; brothers, Richard and Fritz; and sister, Barbara.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Drs. Martin C. Penetar, Sorab Gupta, Eric J. Kemmerer and everyone that helped Denny fight his valiant battle with cancer, and also Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Guardian Rehabilitation and Nursing Home for their care and compassion during his short stay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Divine Mercy Parish, Davis Street, by Rev Francis Pauselli, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call in the church starting at 9 a.m. and send condolences on the funeral home website. Arrangements by Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home, 2908 Birney Ave., Scranton.
