It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, Charles D.
Stewart, on February 1st, 2026. Our Dad died very peacefully with his beloved wife, Norma,
and daughter, Caroline, by his side at Gino Merli Veterans Center. He had been a resident at
Gino Merli for the past year and a half.
Our Dad grew up on Cedar Avenue in South Scranton and graduated from Scranton Technical
High School in 1951. He immediately enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War becoming
part of the military police and was stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador and Clovis, New Mexico.
It was in New Mexico where he met our Mom and was married five months later. Upon finishing
his four years in the Air Force where he proudly served his country, he returned to Scranton.
Our Dad held several jobs before taking a job at the Trane Company where he remained for 32
years before his retirement.
Sharing stories about growing up on Cedar Avenue, the time he served in the Air Force, and
how he met our mother brought our Dad tremendous joy. He also took great pride in our family
home, which he refurbished from the inside-out, working tirelessly for years. He seemed to be
able to fix anything, and he loved tinkering with computers, many of which he purchased from
Ebay.
Our Dad’s love for his family was immeasurable. In fact, he was known at Gino Merli to speak
unceasingly about his children and his wife, Norma. He loved showing his wedding picture to
everyone who entered his room, beaming about his beautiful wife and his marriage of 72 years.
Born to William and Anna (Gibbons) Stewart, he was the second youngest of ten children. He
was predeceased by all but his youngest sibling, Thomas Stewart (Mary) of Naples, FL.
He is survived by his absolutely wonderful wife, Norma Rivera Stewart, and three of his four
children: Renita Stewart Joyce (Kevin Joyce) of Bethlehem, PA; Caroline Stewart Heen (Frank
Heen) of Clarks Summit, PA; Linda Stewart Cecil (Leonard Cecil) of Louisville, KY. He was
predeceased by his eldest son, Curtis Stewart on July 9, 2025, and his infant son, Stephen, in
1958.
Additionally, he was blessed with six grandchildren: Cory Stewart, Bailey Cooper, Steven Little,
Tyler Little, Jared Little, and Veronica Joyce, as well as seven great grandchildren.
Our wonderful, smart, strong, proud, hardworking, and endlessly loving husband and dad will
live in our hearts forever and always. We love you so very much, Dad.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception on Monday February 9th at
10 AM. Friends may call for the viewing at the Church from 9-10 AM before Mass. He will be
interred at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery off Davis Street in Scranton after the
mass. Arrangements entrusted to McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home, 1401 Capouse Street, Scranton, PA 18509.
