Catherine (Nan) A. Carney Garvey

Catherine (Nan) A. Carney Garvey, 95, of Duryea and formerly of Clarks Summit, passed away at home, Saturday, January 17th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Her husband, the late Eugene Garvey, died on January 10th, 1978. Born in Carbondale on August 1st, 1930 to the late Joseph A. Carney and the late Gertrude H. Judge Carney, she was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and took art classes at the University of Scranton. She spent summers at Newton Lake, a place of her fondest childhood memories. Catherine found great joy in raising her six children. She made sure their uniforms were always in tip-top condition and their polished shoes were lined up ready for school in the morning. Known for her kind, gentle nature, Catherine's warmth, compassion, and spontaneous sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She also embodied a strong sense of dignity that radiated class, beauty, and style. Many happy memories consisted of family vacations in Miami Beach and time spent at the Hughes' summer home at Lake Winola, the Carney's cottage at Newton Lake and trips to visit her sons in California. She was very patriotic and loved patriotic music and firework celebrations. After her beloved husband Gene unexpectedly passed away at the age of 47, Catherine was left to raise her 6 children, between the ages of 6 and 22 years old. Finding much strength in her faith, she persevered with grace. In later years, she worked at Abington Manor Nursing Home and for the Social Security Administration. Catherine is survived by her sons James and his wife Soli, San Diego, CA, Frank (Bud) and his wife Michele, Jessup, David and his wife Jennifer, Palm Desert, CA, daughters Erin and her companion Ralph, Wapwallopen, Janet and her companion Anthony, Duryea, grandchildren Cory Garvey, Shalyn Hughes, Tyler Vancosky, and Lauren McHale, as well as 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her late husband Gene, Catherine was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Lynn McHale on April 25th 2024, her sister Claire Loftus, and brother Joseph X. Carney. A celebration of Catherine's life will be held Wednesday, January 21st 2026 from 10am-12pm with a service at 12pm in the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home, 1240 St Ann's Street, Scranton, PA.
