Cassandra Devine, 79, passed peacefully into God’s arms on Oct. 6, 2024.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Doris (Vitall) Conway. Cassandra was a member of the Church of St. Gregory, and a graduate of Scranton Central High School. A much beloved dance instructor, she knew after her first dance class at the age of eight that she wanted to teach dancing. At 15, she studied at the American Ballet School under the direction of notable dancers including Dom Pereslavic, William Dollar and Luigi. She credited Constance Reynolds of the Ballet Theater of Scranton with providing her the opportunity to learn and grow as a dancer and an instructor.
An exquisite dancer, Cassandra studied at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where she earned the Canadian “Maple Leaf” as the outstanding dancer of the season. She also studied at the Harold Krenglink Tansacadmie in Berne, Switzerland.
A member of the Royal Academy of Dancing, London, England and the American Academy of Ballet, New York City, Cassandra owned and operated the Devine School of Dance at the Waverly Community House for 37 years before retiring in 2013. Prior to that, she owned a dance school in Parsippany, N.J. and was on the Fine Arts faculty of the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Dancing was Cassandra’s life, and she often said she was one of the luckiest people in the world to have found a career she truly loved, having instructed thousands of children for more than three decades.
Cassandra is survived by her son, Sean T. Devine, M.D. and his wife, Elizabeth M. Devine, Esq., Scranton; daughter, Kira Coviello and husband, Noah Sullum, Doylestown; daughter, Jaclene Devine and husband, Brad Smith, Clarks Summit; sister, Pam Mayer and husband, Lawrence, Blacksburg, Virginia; brother, Kevin Conway and wife, Lisa, Pocono Manor; sister, Aleta Conway, North Port, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Tim Luther, Carlsbad, Calif. She relished her role of Mom-Mom to grandchildren, Molly, Clare and Grace Devine, Scranton; Eloise, Esme and Tallulah Sullum, Doylestown; and Zack, Carson and Avery Smith, Clarks Summit.
She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her infant son, Darren; her brother, Wells Conway; and her sister, Melissa Conway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of St. Gregory or to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Gregory’s Church, Clarks Green. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the church. Arrangements by Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann’s St., Scranton.
