Brian Patrick Coyne, a lifelong and proud resident of West Scranton, passed away on December 30th with the love of his life by his side. Everyone who knew Brian witnessed his boundless devotion and absolute adoration for his loving wife, Joanne Mackarey Coyne, who he so affectionately referred to as “Sparkles”. They would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this January.
Brian was a 1976 graduate of West Scranton High School and a proud member of the Invaders wrestling team. He was a pressman for over 40 years and a member of the Teamsters Union. He spent his retirement as a full-time caregiver for his wife, but don’t feel bad for him, spending time with her and his family was the joy of his life under any circumstances.
Brian had a larger than life personality and never met a stranger. He could spark up a conversation with anyone and there’s no doubt they would leave the conversation laughing and most likely with a kiss. The only thing bigger than his personality was his heart, especially for his children, grandchildren and all things Penn State. Brian looked forward to family time with such joy and his grandchildren loved spending time with their grandpa. He was a creature of habit and any disruption in his routine was catastrophic, much like the loss his family and loved ones have endured since his passing. He will be forever missed so profoundly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. And Helen Coyne and his brothers Michael (Catherine) and James (Kathleen). In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Rosemarie Coyne and partner Keith Cavallotti, Scranton, Sadie Baldinucci and husband Tony, Scranton, Gabriel Coyne and partner Samantha Erikhman and Brianna Navoczynski and husband DJ; along with Grandchildren Parker, Ezra, Asher, Wesley, Jaxon and Sophia. He is also survived by his siblings; John (Ellen) Coyne, Sr Mary Ellen Coyne, IHM, Joanne (Robert) Hill, Patrick (Stephanie) Coyne, Robert Coyne, Gerald (Marie Curmaci) Coyne, Linda (Brian) Marcks, Joseph (Paula Booth) Coyne, Thomas Coyne and Paul Coyne; as well as dozens of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Friends may call Tuesday from 9am until 11:45am in the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home, 1240 St. Ann's Street, Scranton with a mass of Christian burial at St Ann’s Basilica Parish at noon. Interment Cathedral Cemetery.

Never has an obit captured the heart and soul of a person as well as this. Brian was a giant amongst mere mortals. His smile and his heart were vehicles of peace and love; his devotion to Joanne was unmatched. God bless his family. He has his reward in heaven.

Joanne,
Please accept my condolences. As you and all the Coyne family know, he was a special kind of person. His wit was definitely a strong point, as was his genuineness with others. But neither outshine the Love he had (still has) for you.
Rosemarie, Sadie, Gabriel and Brianna and grandchildren, I am sure he is still smiling with pride as he looks down on you.
And to “The Watson Street Coyne family”, Brian learned so much from each of you. I can only say that he imparted to me some of his wit, value of friendship, and appreciation of family. And I know he did so with many others. It was his nature.
I learned most of these through everyday conversations as I walked with him along Coyne/Watson Street paper route.
Although there was one time when he let me throw the newspaper. It landed on the front porch roof. We looked at each other and I asked what we should do. He smiled and said “Just keep walking … fast”. We delivered the next 8-10 newspapers faster than ever before, had a good laugh and continued on at a normal pace. He had a “bit of the divil” in him. But not much and only with good humor.
I won’t go into the sleigh riding at The Ski Jump which he planned with all the friends. Nor will I go into getting Tim Burns and I to go on a scavenger hunt on a VERY cold Saturday morning back in February 1969. Only Brian could convince folks to do such things. Anyway you all know the ending of that adventure. Suffice to say that, like Brian, it is a long lasting memory I hope to always retain.
Suaimhneas i síocháin, a chara.
Steve
