Arlene Hughes, 89, of Scranton, died Wednesday. She was the widow of August Hughes, who passed away in 2015. Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Clarence and Louise Thomas Penn, she was a graduate of West Scranton High School and worked in the dietary department at Mercy Hospital. She enjoyed gardening and was a dedicated member of Berean Church on Jackson Street. Surviving are her son, Gary Hughes and wife, Frances; two daughters, Karen Kobesky and husband, Ralph; and Diane O'Malley and husband, Patrick; seven grandchildren, Keith Kobesky and wife, Rachel; Jennifer Benke and husband, Ralph; Gary Hughes and wife, Bobbi; Brian Hughes and wife, Shalyn; Kayleigh O'Malley; Danielle O'Malley and husband, Matthew; and Patrick O'Malley; 11 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Veona Romano. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Steamtown Church, Jackson Street, Scranton. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton.
