Ann Marie O’Hara (90) of West Scranton died peacefully Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2021. She was the widow of Cyril M. O’Hara, who died in 2004.
A daughter of the late Mae (Murray) and Michael Dougherty, Ann Marie was born on July 30, 1931, and was a lifelong parishioner at St. Ann’s Monastery Parish. She graduated with the class of 1949 from St. Ann’s High School, received her RN degree with the class of 1952 from the Moses Taylor School of Nursing, and later her bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton.
Ann Marie spent more than 30 years as a nurse at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. Following retirement, she delighted in her association with the Lackawanna Historical Society where she shared her love of local history with visitors and the community.
As the mother of six sons and one daughter, Ann Marie logged decades of volunteering for a range of their activities from Cub Scouts (endless Den Mother), Girl Scouts, St. Ann’s lunchroom, field trips and beyond. She was a devoted member of St. Ann’s Women’s Society and St. Ann’s Choir. An avid traveler, she especially enjoyed many tours with friends and family, whether to Passionist shrines on Shelter Island on Long Island and St. Anne de Beaupre in Quebec; cultural trips to Ireland, Germany, Austria and France; or numerous state explorations throughout the U.S.
Ann Marie is survived by her seven children, Michael, Eileen, James, Donald (Nancy), Timothy, Thomas and Richard O’Hara; six grandchildren, Alexander, Peter and Victoria Fortunato, and Kevin, Kate, and Ryan O’Hara; her beloved sister, Eileen Brady; nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Henry Fortunato.
Throughout her life, Ann Marie shared an enormous capacity for friendship. She cherished her friends as they stood by each other with empathy, humor and acceptance. She was especially proud to remain friends for literally a lifetime with the “West Locust Street Girls” who were able to celebrate her 90th birthday last summer with her in the house that her grandfather built.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Life Geisinger’s PACE program, which enabled Ann Marie to remain at home during her final illness. The family also thanks her niece Marian Anticoli, who provided lively rides to appointments and, most especially, her niece Kathie Sico, for her thoughtful care over the past two years.
