Al T. Hughes

May 22, 1958 to September 29, 2020

Al T. Hughes, 62, of Scranton, died Tuesday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore after a courageous fight against cholangiocarcinoma cancer. Born May 22, 1958, son of the late Thomas J. and Marion Garvey Hughes, he was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Penn State University and McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science, and owner of the Thomas J. In addition, he worked for many years beside his dear friend, Dr. Gary Ross, at Northeast Pathology. Al was an avid golfer and member of Elmhurst Country Club and formerly Glen Oak Country Club and the Country Club of Scranton. He enjoyed dining at local restaurants and making people laugh anywhere he went. Al would go above and beyond for his family, friends and customers. Known for his quick wit and ability to light up a room, he was always a joy to be around. Above all things, Al was a loving and caring father who cherished his daughters and spending time with them. His girls were his world. Taken too soon, he will be dearly missed. Surviving are two daughters, Bailey Patrick and husband, Ryan, Collegeville, Pa.; and Allie Hughes and husband, Lyons, Salt Lake City, Utah; two brothers, T.J. Hughes and wife, Laurie; and Timothy Hughes and wife, Vicky, all of Scranton; best friend, Dorothy Palermo, Old Forge; mother of his daughters, Carol Hughes; companion, Kathleen Agurkis; nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Timmy, Vicky, T.J., Laurie (& families), We are so sorry to hear of Al's passing. I'll always remember him as being such a nice, funny guy. Some of my happiest childhood memories were from Lake Winola celebrating summers with our favorite neighbors -The Hughes Family. So many great times w/ lots of laughter. I'm sure this can't be easy. May you all find comfort & strength in each other, family & friends during this difficult time. Please know you're in our thoughts & prayers.

Dear TJ, Tim and family, I am so sorry to hear of Al’s passing. He was far too young and you are in my prayers. Susan and I are so grateful for the incredible care he took of our Mom, as your dad did of our Father. It is a rare ability you have to give comfort in times of such loss...I pray you have this comfort now❤️ Maryellen and Susan
