William 'Popsie' Bernavage

November 23, 1941 to November 23, 2016

William “Popsie” Bernavage, 95, of Scranton, died peacefully Saturday at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion McCarthy Bernavage, who passed away in 2007. Bill and Marion celebrated 60 years of marriage on July 12, 2007.Born in Scranton, son of the late Martin and Mary Bernavage, he was an Army and Air Force veteran, having served in Germany during World War II, where he received the Good Conduct Medal. Before retirement, he worked as a butcher for Gutheinz, IGA (Mr. Z’s) and Price Chopper supermarkets. He was a member of the Union Lodge 291 F&AM and the Irem Temple Shrine. Bill was also a past state councilor for the Pa. State Council Junior Order of United American Mechanics and past councilor of Dunmore Council 1022. He was also an avid Red Sox fan. Bill was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and devoted friend who will be deeply missed by many.Surviving are four grandchildren, William Martin Jr., Kristopher and Joseph Bernavage, and Charles Pisano; a great-grandson, William Martin Bernavage III; daughter-in-law, Karen Bernavage; best friend, Robert Buraczewski; as well as many nieces and nephews.He was also preceded in death by his son, William Martin Bernavage Sr., who passed away on Sept. 28, 2016; and five brothers, John, Michael, Harry, Patrick and Joseph Bernavage.His family and friends would like to thank the staff and nurses at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center for their outstanding care and compassion. Popsie’s existence greatly enhanced all of our lives and he will forever live in our hearts.A funeral service will be held Friday at noon from the Davies & Jones Funeral Chapel, 135 S. Main Ave., Scranton. Interment with military honors, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.Friends may call Friday at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in Bill’s name to the Gino J.
