John J. May Sr., 77, of Scranton, died Sunday at Commonwealth Hospice. His wife of 57 years is Helene Gavin May.Born in Scranton, son of the late Joseph and Rita McAndrew May, he was a member of St. Ann’s Basilica and a graduate of West Scranton High School class of 1956. Before retirement, he was employed by UPS, serving as the union steward while there. John was a proud member of the Teamsters and also enjoyed working at UNO Gym and Keystone Pathological after his retirement. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and a dedicated caretaker of Sloan Little League.The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Martin Hyzinski, Dr. Lee Besen, Commonwealth Hospice, and all of their staffs for their devoted care.Also surviving are four sons, John Jr., Scranton; Paul, Dunmore; Joseph and wife, Joell, Old Forge; and Michael and wife, Paula, Scranton; eight grandchildren, Marissa, Stephanie, Michael, Egan, Madison, Mackenzie and Colin May, and Jordan Checho; a sister, Jean Magliano and husband, Anthony, Long Island; three sisters-in-law, Debra May, Mary Kincel and Betty Gavin; nieces, nephews and cousins.He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerome; and his aunt and uncle, Molly and Joseph Finnerty.The funeral will be Saturday at 10:45 a.m. from the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann’s St., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in St. Ann’s Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
