James J. Beahan

James J. Beahan, 80, of Scranton died Saturday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart after a courageous battle with cancer. His wife is the former Ann L. Pedley. The couple celebrated 58 years of marriage on Oct 11.Born in Simpson, son of the late James P. and Alice Washeleski Beahan, he was a member of St. Anns Basilica, where he served on the Parish Council for many years, a graduate of Fell Twp. High School, and attended the University of Scranton. Before retirement, he was employed by Big Chief Market and Food Fair, where he met his wife, Ann. He worked as deputy mayor for the city of Scranton, the City Clerks Office, Lackawanna County in the personal property tax office and the hotel tax office, was a district manager for the Scranton Times, and served on the board of directors for the Lackawanna County Visitors Center. He also served on the board for St. Anns Credit Union, where he was a past president, was very active with the Democratic Party and Scranton Coin Club, and was a past president of the Summit Pointe Condo Assn. Along with being the family historian, he also enjoyed the company of his dog, Luna, and his cat, Marvin. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle who was devoted to his family, especially his wife.Also surviving are two sons, James P. and wife Danielle, Scranton; and Christopher P. and wife Patricia A., Clarks Summit; 5 daughters, Ann Judith Beahan, Ledyard, CT; Patricia A., Pittsburgh; Amy A. Barth and husband Gerald Jr., Torrington Ct; Kathleen A. Beahan and Travis Hurst, De Pere, Wi; and Colleen, Scranton; 9 grandchildren, Patrick and Stephen Finucane, Meghan, Erika, Jonathan, and Penelope Beahan, J.T. Barth, Alice Hurst, and Madyson Heffron-Wilk; nieces, nephews, and cousins.He was preceded in death by a son, John P.; and three sisters, Alice 'Bunny' Beahan, Maryann Thomas, and Rose Marie Beahan.The family would like to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart and the Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley for their outstanding care.The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:45am from the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 1240 St. Ann St., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Anns Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
