John G. Connor

Retired Lt. Col. John G. Connor, Scranton, went to his eternal rest at Regional Hospital, Scranton, on February 25, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Hildegard Langner Connor. Son of the late James and Amanda Schamberg Connor, John was a 1955 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree Cum Laude from the University of Scranton in 1960. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1960, remaining on active duty until 1977, which included two tours of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. His service to our country also included two tours of duty attached to the NATO staff in Holland and Germany. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves where he graduated from the Command and General Staff College in 1981, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. His personal military decorations include: two Bronze Stars, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, Vietnam Service Medal with three Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Vietnam Gallantry Crosses and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Medal.Following his release from active duty, he returned to Scranton and was employed by the Mercy Hospital, Scranton, in the Data Processing Department until his retirement in 1998.John was a member of American Legion Post 920 and VFW Post 6879. He was an active parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish, Scranton.John is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Robert Sr., Berenice Connor Gavin, and James Sr. and wife Eleanor, Scranton; Joan Connor Ardizoni, Clarks Summit; Patrick and wife Jean, Paradise Valley; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10:30am in Divine Mercy Parish. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home, 2908 Birney Avenue, Scranton. Those attending the Funeral are asked to go directly to the Church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Ann’s Shrine Basilica, 1233 St. Ann Street, Scranton or St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton.
