Robert C. John

January 30, 1940 to January 30, 2015

Robert Caton Johnson left this Earth peacefully on Monday, Jan. 26, with his loving wife, Darlene (Dot), by his side at their vacation home in Florida, after a brief illness.Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Bob attended Louisiana State and St. John’s University, and then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army with the same honor with which he lived every part of his life.It was in Scranton where Darlene Dolan caught his eye and captured his heart. The two were wed at Holy Rosary Church, and would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this June.Bob and Dot made a life filled with love of friends and family in Roselle Park, N.J., where they raised their two children, Kathleen and Robert. After 26 years at Verizon, Bob retired, settling in at Lake Winola.Bob transitioned easily into his retirement, enjoying a life of fishing from his dock, reading novels, with a special interest in history and the Civil War, doing The New York Times crossword puzzle and, his favorite activity, being with his wife.Bob was blessed to have a family who loved to celebrate life with him. In addition to his children, Kathy and Robert, his grandchildren, who lovingly and proudly called him “Pop Pop,” put smiles on his face that were as bright as his blue eyes. Whether it was their time spent at Lake Winola, where they fished at his side and enjoyed swimming and boat rides, their yearly visit to Disney World or through their dance recitals, sporting activities and academic achievements, they always filled his heart with joy.In addition to his wife, Darlene, Bob is survived by his daughter, Kathy and her husband, Brian Fidati; their three beautiful children, Kaitlyn, Laura and Robert, Bethlehem, Pa.; and Bob’s son, Robert and his wife, Krisi; and their five wonderful children, Chelsea, Chandler, Caton, Delaney and Brady Johnson, Lititz; a sister, Dorothy Murray, Red Bank, N.J.; a brother, James Johnson, Gulf Stream, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Carol Dolan Luby and husband, Joseph, Scranton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Caton Johnson; and his brother, Donald. The water at Lake Winola will be a little higher now as tears of mourning are wept. But when spring arrives and that first fishing line is cast, we can smile knowing that Bob is at peace watching over the ones he loved, who will always treasure their joyful memories with him.Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann St., Scranton, PA 18504. The Mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Lake Church, 1872 Dalton Road, Lake Winola, by the Rev.
