Thomas J. Spellman

Thomas J. Spellman, 98, of Scranton, died Saturday at Green Ridge Care Center from natural causes. He an his wife, Mary Virginia Walsh Spellman, celebrated 71 years of marriage on June 16th.Born in Minooka on September 1, 1918, he was the son of the late Martin J. and Mary Higgins Spellman. Upon his mothers death, he was raised by his stepmother, Mary Gonda Walsh Spellman. He attended Minooka Grade School and graduated from what was then Johnson Trade School in 1936. Thomas worked for the US Post Office until his retirement in 1980 and was a member of St. Pauls Parish in Green Ridge. A passionate golfer, he was a former member of Elkview Country Club.Also surviving are a daughter, Barbara and husband James Shuta, Dickson City; two sons, Thomas, Yorktown VA; and Mark, Reston, VA; two grandsons, Jeffrey Shuta (Alison) and Ryan Spellman; two great-grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Shuta; several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.He was preceded in death by a son, Michael, who died April 7, 2016; two brothers, Robert, Drexel Hill; and Martin, Carbondale; and a sister, Helen Gessler, Carbondale.The funeral will be Wednesday at 11am from St. Clares Church, 2301 N Washington Ave. Relatives and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 9am until service at the Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
